Rockville Economic Development, Inc. (REDI) recently hosted a cybersecurity event with a panel of experts across the
spectrum of security concerns, including VariQ’s Vice President
of Cyber Programs, Olin Green.
The seminar was provided as a service to small to midsized companies to
raise awareness of cyber threats and to highlight the importance of taking
steps to reduce potential threats to their operations.
Various topics were addressed during the forum, including password protection,
phishing, and the need for developing education, awareness, and preparedness.
Olin Green spoke to the importance of developing a cybersecurity strategy
to that end: “For a corporation, your data is your classified information,
what differentiates you from your competitors. As a company, you have
to identify what needs to be protected from a cyber-perspective and ensure
that your information, people, or technology are not exposed.”
The results of CohnReznick’s 2017
Global Cyber Security Survey indicated that there is “a significant need for middle-market organizations
around the world to improve their overall understanding of the cybersecurity
risk landscape.” In their analysis, they concluded that awareness,
education, and investment are needed to increase preparedness and reduce
exposure to cyber attacks.
Green highlighted the importance of creating a plan to address cybersecurity
vulnerabilities: “A cybersecurity plan doesn’t have to be
cumbersome. You can start by identifying elements that are most important
and vulnerable, and most critical to your success as a company, and build
your plan from there.” He also pointed to the critical need for
training to a
dequately equip employees to identify and combat cyber threats, given that
employees have been identified as one of the weakest links in the chain
of cybersecurity events.
VariQ was honored to participate on this panel of experts. The company
was recognized by REDI as “one of the fastest growing cyber companies
in the region” in their presentation at the event.
