Ben Edson: President and Chief Executive Officer

Ben Edson founded VariQ in 2003 as a single employee start-up with the vision of providing professional cybersecurity, software development, and IT infrastructure services to federal and state government. As an industry innovator and results-driven entrepreneur, Ben has built an award-winning business that engineers and delivers technical, problem solving solutions while fostering lasting partnerships with industry leaders.

Ben Edson has served on the board of directors for both the Small and Emerging Contractors Advisory Forum (SECAF) and WorkSource Montgomery since 2015. He was awarded the Washington GovCon Executive of the Year award in 2015. In 2016, he received the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Leader of the Year award and the Washington SmartCEO's Family Business Legacy award. VariQ was named Cybersecurity Company of the Year by Montgomery County in 2015, and received the ACG Capital’s Growth Company of the Year award in 2017.

Ben earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, and an MBA and Master of Science in Information Telecommunications Systems from the Carey Business School of Johns Hopkins University.

Tom Edson: Chief Financial and Operations Officer

As CFO for VariQ, Tom Edson is responsible for the overall financial governance and management of VariQ's operations. He directs, monitors, and administers activities and policies related to the company’s financial position.

Prior to joining VariQ, Tom worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, serving for five years as a senior associate, where he specialized in financial statement audits of numerous financial companies such as hedge funds and banking clients. In 2010, he relocated to Washington DC to join the VariQ team.

Tom Edson received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Texas, San Antonio. He received his CPA certification from the State of Texas, and is a certified Project Management Professional. He was the recipient of the Washington DC Executive Management Award in 2016 and the Trending 40 award in 2017 for Rising Stars in Federal Technology.

Asya Smith

Asya Smith has served as VariQ’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) since 2015. She brings a wealth of relevant education and experience to her challenging role as one of VariQ’s corporate executives. Ms. Smith has expertise directing 100+ teams with budgets in excess of $90 million, and 15+ years of diverse project management experience in the design, development, and implementation of integrated technology solutions.

Before joining VariQ, Asya served as VP of IT Application Services and Operations Support for Zenith American Solutions, the largest third-party benefit plan administrator in the U.S. She also served as PMO Director in support of various government clients, and was responsible for large Fannie Mae software development and compliance teams.

Asya holds a Master of Science in Information Technology from Sofia Technical University and a Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University. She holds PMP, CSM, SPC and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certifications.

Brian Edwards: Director of Business Development

Brian Edwards serves as VariQ’s Vice President for the Civilian Sector. In this capacity, Mr. Edwards is responsible for business development and capture, and is tasked to lead and improve company growth by leveraging VariQ’s core capabilities and exceptional past performance across a diverse customer base.

Mr. Edwards has been working in the field of security since 2001, managing and supporting the development and implementation of security initiatives across a wide spectrum of customers including the Federal Financial Sector, Department of Defense, Petro-Chemical companies, and U.S. Embassies. His career has encompassed roles in leadership, executive management, business development/capture, marketing, decision-making, and problem solving.

Mr. Edwards has a successful record of accomplishments in developing, managing, and delivering solutions that generate revenue, meet customer requirements, and expand market share. Mr. Edwards was instrumental in VariQ receiving numerous industry-recognized awards and commendations.

Joy Cox

As Director of Operations and Communications, Joy Cox is responsible for the oversight of VariQ’s daily operations and the implementation of strategic communications to advance VariQ’s business plan. She oversees the company’s day-to-day activities, including human resources, IT support, personnel security, quality assurance, facilities and purchasing, as well as VariQ’s marketing and branding efforts and public relations.

Prior to joining VariQ, Ms. Cox worked for over 15 years in the field of international project management in the non-profit sector, providing oversight to geographically dispersed teams in over 20 countries. She also served as a consultant on messaging strategies, crisis management, and multilingual website and publication creation.

Joy is passionate about growing VariQ’s values-based culture, fostering employee engagement, and supporting a climate for expansion and world class service delivery. She holds Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM), and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v3 Foundation certifications.

Olin Green

Olin Green is VariQ’s Vice President for Cyber Programs. He is a seasoned business leader, with 18+ years of experience in various areas of Information Technology (IT), and has provided executive oversight and program management to numerous IT and Cyber Security programs throughout his career. Presently, he manages a portfolio of 18 security risk management and cyber operations and engineering programs.

Before joining VariQ, Olin worked 12 years with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc., serving as Senior Director of Enterprise Services and Director of Business Development. Olin also served as Chief Enterprise Architect for acquisition, systems engineering, and enterprise solutions developments and implementations and managed enterprise network situational awareness solution deployments for federal entities.

Olin Green holds an associate degree in Computer Electronics Technology from ECPI College of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems from Strayer University. He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Matt Bringman

Matt Bringman serves as VariQ’s Vice President for the National Security Sector, representing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Justice and Department of Defense (DoD). His focus is the development of strategic partnerships, opportunity capture, and increasing the company’s footprint, while providing the leadership team at VariQ with strategic and innovative thought, creative approaches and proven processes.

Prior to VariQ, Matt held director level positions in operations and business development at small and medium sized companies. For over 17 years, Matt developed and executed programs of up to $200M across the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, FBI, NASA and the private sector. His experience in program management spans the development of acquisition plans and documentation for multi-year programs, to providing management and technical support for large and complex programs.

Matt Bringman earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University, and a Master of Business Administration from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

Katarina Auer

Kat Auer has 25+ years of experience in Information Assurance, Cybersecurity, Network Operations, and Information Technology. For over 17 years, she has provided Executive and Program Management leadership for the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, and Legislative customers. She currently serves as the director of VariQ’s IT Infrastructure portfolio.

Kat has extensive background in federal IT, Security Operations Centers (SOCs), security engineering, architecture, management, policy guidelines, and Computer Network Defense (CND) tools and implementation. She has provided program management leadership for numerous government clients, including the fast-paced 24x7x365 SOC environment for the Joint Task Force for Global Network Operations (JTF-GNO, now USCYBERCOM), Defense Intelligence Agency, and the U.S. Senate.

Kat has a BA in Communication from George Mason University and numerous graduate level professional certificates, including ITIL Foundations, Editing and Publications, Small Business Consulting, as well as Program Management Certification from George Washington University.
