Ben Edson: President and Chief Executive Officer

Ben Edson founded VariQ in 2003, and has applied his business and cyber security leadership into growing a professional services business which focuses on State and Federal customers. As a positive-minded and results-driven manager, his background uniquely complements his drive to deliver technical, problem solving solutions while fostering lasting, trusted partnerships with industry leaders. His specialties are in the areas of Cyber and Information Security, Systems Design and Integration, and Program Management.

Prior to VariQ he held the position of Security Architect at MSD and Security Consultant at Symantec where he performed numerous technical implementations throughout the United States and Mexico for Fortune 100 and commercial clients. Additionally he was the Business Manager for The Family Missions, an international non-profit organization.

Ben holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Information Telecommunications Systems from the Carey Business School of Johns Hopkins University. In addition, he holds numerous current and expired certifications including CISSP, SCSP, CISM, MCSE, CCNA, MSITS, ACIA, and GCIH.

Tom Edson: Chief Financial and Operations Officer

As CFO for VariQ, Tom Edson has been responsible for the overall financial governance and management of VariQ's operations. He directs, monitors, and administers activities and policies related to the company’s financial position.

Tom Edson received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Texas, San Antonio. He received his CPA certification from the State of Texas, and is a certified Project Management Professional.

Prior to joining VariQ, Tom worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, serving for five years as a senior associate, where he specialized in financial statement audits of numerous financial companies such as hedge funds and banking clients. In 2010 he accepted VariQ’s invitation, and moved to Washington DC to join the VariQ team.

Asya Smith joined VariQ in 2015 as the organization’s chief operating officer (COO). She brings a wealth of relevant education and experience to her challenging role as one of VariQ’s corporate executives. When she’s not creating a budget management strategy or cost-benefit analysis, Asya is forecasting VariQ’s future resource needs to fuel even more rapid growth and expansion. She has expertise directing 100+ teams with budgets in excess of $90 million, plus more than 15 years of diverse project management experience in the design, development, and implementation of integrated technology solutions.

Before joining VariQ, Asya served as Vice President of IT Application Services and Operations Support for Zenith American Solutions, the largest third-party benefit plan administrator in the U.S. She also served as PMO Director in support of various government clients, including the CIO of DOE and FSA, and was responsible for large Fannie Mae software development and compliance teams. Asya holds a Master of Science in Information Technology from Sofia Technical University and a Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University. She is also a certified Project Management Professional and a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.

Bradley K. Stegman: Vice President of Strategic Markets

Mr. Stegman joined VariQ Corporation in April of 2014 and serves as Vice President of Strategic Markets. Mr. Stegman is responsible for Business Development / Capture for opportunities in the DHS, NGA, and WHCA markets. He is responsible for leading and improving company growth and profitability by exploiting VariQ’s core capabilities and exceptional past performance across a diverse customer base. This includes new business as well as all re-compete (incumbent) opportunities.

Mr. Stegman’s career spans more than 30 years encompassing roles in leadership, executive management, business development / capture, marketing, decision making, and problem solving serving the U.S. defense, intelligence, and homeland security markets. Mr. Stegman is recognized for his ability to foster and maintain collaboration with diverse groups of highly skilled personnel in challenging and fast paced settings while maximizing performance toward achieving high profile goals and objectives.

Mr. Stegman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance) and a Master of Business Administration (Management) from Old Dominion University. Additionally, Mr. Stegman holds Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM), and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v3 Foundation certifications.

Craig Heizer

Terry serves as Vice President of Cyber Programs for VariQ. In this role Terry manages all VariQ cybersecurity business and is responsible for the development and capture of new cybersecurity business in both the federal and commercial sectors. Terry leads a team of over 100 cybersecurity analysts, engineers, and operators providing risk management, security engineering and architecture, cyber operations, incident response, and breach management solutions and services. Prior to joining VariQ Terry was President and CEO of Cybergy Partners, a family of companies providing leading edge solutions and thought leadership in cybersecurity, renewable energy, energy efficiency, data analytics, and business intelligence. Terry previously held executive positions at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) and Booz Allen Hamilton.

Terry has over 30 years of technical, business, and staff management experience with a specialization in commercial, military, and intelligence IT and enterprise business solutions. He is a subject matter expert in enterprise risk management and organizational security program development, implementation, and management with a comprehensive background and operational experience in all security disciplines.

Terry is a veteran of the first Gulf War serving in the United States Air Force as a career Non-Commissioned Officer from 1984 through 2000. While on active duty, Terry obtained his Associates in Applied Science (AAS), his Bachelors of Science (BS) in Computer Science, and his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialty in Telecommunications Management.

Since 2001 Brian Edwards has worked in the field of security, managing and supporting the development and implementation of security initiatives across a wide spectrum of customers including the Executive Offices of the White House, the Department of Defense, Petro-Chemical Companies and U.S. Embassies.

He has managed hundreds of facility protection projects around the globe. He specializes in working with clients to identify their needs and provide effective solutions.

Prior to joining VariQ, Brian Edwards held the position of Director of Business Development for Mitigation Technologies. In this capacity he worked to grow Mitigation Technologies into a multi-million dollar corporation. One key achievement was securing the only Department of Homeland Security, SAFETY Act coverage for a blast mitigation product.

Joy Cox

As Director of Communications, Joy Cox is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic communications plan that advances VariQ’s strategy and goals. She oversees all aspects of the company’s marketing efforts, including branding, social media, advertising, and public relations. Ms. Cox focuses on conveying VariQ's message and ensuring that communications strategies are organizationally aligned. She works to ensure that employees understand the company’s vision, direction and goals.

Joy brings over 15 years of experience in international project management. Living outside the United States for most of her life has given her international fluency through working across a broad range of cultures and languages. Her oversight of geographically dispersed creative teams required frequent travel to over 20 countries. She has consulted international nonprofits and associations on messaging strategies, crisis management solutions, and the creation of multilingual websites and publications. She is also a published author.

Joy accepted VariQ’s invitation in early 2015, and moved to Washington D.C. to join the leadership team. She is passionate about growing VariQ’s values-based culture, fostering employee engagement, and supporting a climate for expansion and world class service delivery. Ms. Cox holds Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM), and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v3 Foundation certifications.

Craig Heizer

Craig Heizer joined VariQ as Senior Director of Special Programs in 2014, bringing 30 years of technical and management experience. He promotes business development and oversees program operations for VariQ’s emerging markets inside the Federal government. Craig’s proven history of project management success shows he is a technically savvy, results-focused manager, well-suited for this dual role. He has negotiated and won key contract agreements with Federal agencies and multibillion-dollar Fortune 500 companies. As a result, he knows how to best-leverage industry relationships and experts to build program teams. Not only is Craig responsible for developing winning proposals, he also directs post-award operations to meet government program requirements.

Before coming to VariQ, Craig worked as a transition manager, solution architect, and systems / design engineer for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) and NASA, among others. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology and a Master of Science degree, in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University. Craig has also been certified in ITIL version 3 Foundation, and as a Project Management Professional (PMP).

Bella Trenkova joined the VariQ team in 2016 as Line of Business Director, Development Programs. She oversees all VariQ software development programs, ensuring high quality delivery and cross-program continuity and consistency of best practices for software engineering and program management. A key part of her role is to support the Business Development division in writing winning proposals, and expand the company’s software development core competency.

Bella brings to the leadership team more than 20 years of IT experience and expertise in standing up and managing large-scale transformation programs. Her most formative professional years were in the Financial Services sector where she worked as a Program Manager and an Agile Delivery Lead, leading major transformation efforts for a Fortune 500 company.

Bella holds a graduate degree in Computer Science from Sofia Technical University, Bulgaria. After a short meandering in the field of networking and system administration, Bella found her passion in software development and project management. She is a certified PMP, PgPM, PMP-ACP, CSM, and SA.
